Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is a public research university in the city of Liverpool, England. The university has its main campus in the city centre, with a second campus located in Mount Pleasant, to the north of the city. LJMU was formed in 1992 from a merger between two existing colleges – John Moores University and Liverpool Polytechnic.

The university offers over 300 undergraduate courses and around 130 postgraduate courses across a wide range of subject areas. These include arts and humanities, business and law, education, health, science and engineering. LJMU has strong links with industry and commerce, and its graduates are highly sought after by employers.

The university is named after Sir John Moores, who was born in Liverpool in 1896. He founded the Littlewoods football pools company and donated large sums of money to charitable causes in his hometown. In 1980, he was awarded a knighthood for his services to charity. The John Moores Foundation continues to support LJMU financially today.

LJMU is ranked among the top 150 universities in Europe (Times Higher Education European Teaching Rankings 2020) and is also ranked amongst the world’s top 600 universities (QS World University Rankings 2021). It is a member of the prestigious Russell Group of leading UK research universities.

The university has its origins in two 19th-century institutions – Liverpool Mechanics’ School of Arts (established 1823) and Liverpool Institute (established 1844). These two institutions merged to form Liverpool Polytechnic in 1970. The name ‘John Moores University’ was adopted following the donation of £10 million by Sir John Moores towards the construction of new buildings on Mount Pleasant campus. In 1992, Liverpool Polytechnic merged with St Helens College to form Merseyside Metropolitan County Polytechnic which became known asLiverpool John Moores University after another generous donation from Sir John Moorsin 1993 .
