McGill University (French: Université McGill) is a public research university in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Founded in 1821 by royal charter granted by King George IV, it is one of the oldest universities in Canada. The university is consistently ranked as one of the top medical schools in the world and as one of the best overall universities in Canada and internationally.
The school’s main campus covers about 3.8 square kilometres (1.5 sq mi) situated on the southern slope of Mount Royal west of downtown Montreal. Most buildings are situated along Sherbrooke Street West between Pine Avenue and Peel Street, with many other affiliated institutions located nearby including Hôtel-Dieu de Montréal hospital and Maisonneuve Park to its east. The Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Medicine (including its teaching hospitals), Macdonald Campus School of Agriculture in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue are all located outside downtown Montreal though still within Greater Montreal Area limits.
The Mcgill University Health Centre, which includes two hospitals (the Montreal General Hospital and the Royal Victoria Hospital), four research institutes, and numerous clinics and services also forms an integral part of McGill’s downtown campus footprint within city limits – though not physically connected to it – with several entrances from city streets surrounding McGill’s perimeter or from inside Maisonneuve Park itself. TheMartlets teams compete in U Sports while most students participate intramural sports through recreation facilities such as Tomlinson Fieldhouse and Molson Stadium or enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and skiing that can be done year-round thanks toMontreal’s climate.
