Missouri University (MU) is a public research university located in Columbia, Missouri, United States. Founded in 1839 as the first public institution of higher education west of the Mississippi River, it is the flagship campus of the University of Missouri System and home to the MU College of Arts and Science, the largest college at MU. With an enrollment of over 30,000 students, MU is also one of the largest universities in Missouri. The school’s mascot is Truman the Tiger and its sports teams compete in Division I of the NCAA as members of the Southeastern Conference.

Missouri University was founded in 1839 by Boone County residents who wanted an institution of higher learning in their region. The first class consisted of just six students, but enrollment quickly grew. By 1862, when MU became a land-grant university under the Morrill Act signed by President Abraham Lincoln, there were more than 1,000 students attending classes on campus. The American Civil War led to some disruptions at MU, but following Reconstruction and into the early 20th centuryMU experienced significant growth. This period saw construction of many new buildings on campus, including academic halls such as Jesse Hall (1903) and Francis Quadrangle (1924), as well as residential colleges like Rollins College (1885). In recent yearsMU has undergone extensive renovations and expansion, with new facilities such as Memorial Union Tower (2008), Jesse Wrench Auditorium (2011), Mark Twain Residential College(2012), Lewis & Clark Village residence halls(2013),MizzouRecreation Complex & Student Recreation Center(2015)
