National University of Singapore (NUS) is an autonomous research university in Singapore. Founded in 1905 as the Straits Settlements and Federated Malay States Government Medical School, NUS is the oldest higher education institution in Singapore. N US has a broad-based curriculum, offering courses in various disciplines including the arts and social sciences, business, law, medicine and dentistry, engineering, science and music at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The university’s main campus is located centrally within Singapore’s urban core, occupying about 36 hectares (89 acres) of land on a 99-year lease from the government.
As one of Asia’s top universities, NUS has consistently been placed among the world’s best in international rankings. In 2019, QS World University Rankings ranked NUS 21st overall in the world and 1st in Asia; while Times Higher Education World University Rankings placed it at 26th globally and 2nd regionally. Additionally, NUS was also ranked 1st among Asian universities by two other international ranking systems – CWTS Leiden Ranking (2019) and U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities Ranking (2018).
