Oklahoma State University (OSU) is a large, public research university in the United States. Founded in 1890, it is the flagship institution of the Oklahoma State University System and is located in Stillwater, Oklahoma. OSU enrolls over 24,000 students from all 50 states and more than 100 countries. It offers more than 200 undergraduate majors and over 150 graduate programs.
The university’s athletic teams are known as the Cowboys and Cowgirls and compete in NCAA Division I athletics. OSU is a member of the Big 12 Conference and sponsors teams in ten men’s and eight women’s sports. The men’s basketball team has won two national championships (1945 and 1946) while the football team has won one (1958).
OSU is classified by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education as a ” doctoral/research university-extensive.” It ranks among the top 100 universities in several measures, including research expenditures, number of doctorates awarded, and endowment size. The National Science Foundation ranks OSU among the top 50 public universities in terms of research expenditures. The university also operates two branch campuses: OKC Medical Center in Oklahoma City and Tulsa Medical Center in Tulsa.
