Osteocytes are cells that make up the bone and are responsible for its strength and structure. They are the most common type of cell in the bone and are found in all bones. Osteocytes have a number of important functions, including:

– Providing support and structural integrity to the bone

– Regulating calcium metabolism

– Producing hormones that regulate blood calcium levels

– Responding to mechanical stress on the bone (such as during exercise) by producing new bone growth
