Palaegenetics is a new and upcoming field of science which deals with the study of ancient DNA. The main focus of palaegenetics is to reconstruct the genomes of extinct animals and plants, and to use this information in order to better understand the evolution of life on Earth. So far, palaegeneticists have been able to successfully reconstruct the genomes of a number of extinct species, including Neanderthals, Denisovans, and woolly mammoths. In addition to providing insights into the evolution of these extinct species, palaegenetic data has also been used to study the history of human migration and disease. As the field of palaegenetics continues to develop, it is likely that its impact on our understanding of both evolutionary history and human health will only continue to grow.
