Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics (PI) is an independent research centre located in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. It was founded in 1999 by Mike Lazaridis, the co-founder and former co-CEO of BlackBerry Limited. It is also a founding member of the Perimeter Scholars International program. The institute’s mission is to “advance our understanding of the universe at its most fundamental level through theoretical physics, bringing together leading international scientists to work on problems that could not be tackled by any one individual or country”.

In 2012, Time magazine named PI one of the “Seven Wonders of Modern Science”, citing its role as a “magnet for physicists” and its contributions to scientific research.
