Polaris Observatory Association (POA) is a non-profit, membership organization dedicated to the advancement of science and technology through research and education. The POA was founded in 1968 by a group of amateur astronomers who wanted to build an observatory open to the public. The first Polaris Observatory was built in 1970 in San Mateo County, California. Today, the POA operates two observatories: one in San Mateo County and one in Marin County. The POA also offers astronomy classes and workshops for adults and children, as well as telescope rental programs.
The Polaris Observatory Association is committed to providing access to quality astronomical facilities and promoting scientific literacy. In addition to operating its own observatories, the POA provides financial support for other astronomy education programs around the Bay Area. The POA has also been active in advocating for the protection of dark skies from light pollution.
