Proteins are essential nutrients for the human body. They are the building blocks of all tissues, including muscles, bones, skin, and hair. Proteins are also involved in many biochemical processes, such as metabolism and cell signaling. The word “protein” comes from the Greek word πρώτειος (protos), meaning “primary” or “of first importance.”
There are four types of protein: complete, incomplete, animal-based, and plant-based. Complete proteins contain all 20 amino acids needed to build new proteins in the body. Incomplete proteins lack one or more of these amino acids. Animal-based proteins are complete proteins that come from animal sources, such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy products. Plant-based proteins are incomplete proteins that come from plant sources, such as grains, beans, nuts, and seeds.
The human body needs protein for many reasons. Proteins are used to build and repair tissues; make enzymes and hormones; store energy; and provide structure to cells and organs. When people don’t get enough protein in their diets they can experience muscle weakness, fatigue , slowed growth , trouble healing wounds , hair loss , weakened immune system function , anemia , mood swings , poor concentration , headaches
Assuming a daily intake of 2000 Calories:
The FDA recommends a minimum daily intake (RDA) of 0.36 grams per pound (0.8 g/kg) for adults which amounts to:
•56 grams per day for the average sedentary man
•46 grams per day for the average sedentary woman
athletes or people with physically demanding jobs may require up to 2 times the RDA or more
Protein requirements increase during adolescence due to growth spurts & during pregnancy & lactation
Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs): Estimated Average Requirements (EARs)and Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) Protein Adequacy Ratio : PER = PDCAAS x NPU x Amino Acid Score / 100% if PER > 1 then adequate if PER < 1 then inadequate Based on this information we can see how important it is to have an adequate amount of protein in our diets not only for general health but also specific conditions like pregnancy .
