One of the earliest known examples of a puzzle is the Greek legend of Theseus and the Minotaur. In this story, Theseus must enter a labyrinth and defeat the Minotaur, who is hidden inside. This legend likely inspired the creation of physical mazes, which are still popular today. Other early examples of puzzles include Chinese Tangram pieces and Japanese hanjie grids.
Physical puzzles became increasingly popular in Europe during the Renaissance period. One famous example is the Mechanical Turk, an automaton that could beat human chess players at their own game. The Turk was eventually revealed to be a hoax, but it nonetheless captured people’s imaginations and spurred further interest in mechanical devices that could perform seemingly impossible tasks.
During the 19th century, several famous mathematicians began creating new types of abstract puzzles that were more theoretical in nature. Examples include Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865), which contains various logic problems, and Sam Loyd’s 14-15-14 Puzzle (1878), which stumped mathematicians for over 50 years before it was finally solved by English mathematician Percy MacMahon in 1930.
