Founded in 1829, Rochester Institute of Technology is a private higher education institute located in Henrietta, New York. The university has 9 collegiate units and offers over 200 undergraduate and graduate programs. It is the 4th largest private university in New York state. The University’s motto is “Service Through Learning”.

Rochester Institute of Technology was founded as Rensselaer School by Judge Ambrose Spencer in 1829. In 1851, the school renamed itself as Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute after merging with another local institution. In 1944, the name was changed again to Rochester Institute of Technology following a grant from the George Eastman Foundation. The institute became a technological university in 1966 when it began offering doctoral degrees.

Rochester Institute of Technology is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and various other professional organizations. It is also classified as a Doctoral University: Higher Research Activity by Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The university has an endowment of $285 million as of 2018.

The campus of Rochester Institute Of Technology spans over 1,300 acres (5 km²) in suburban Henrietta, New York, bordering Brighton and Pittsford, two northern suburbs of Rochester. There are more than 170 buildings on campus including 11 residence halls that can accommodate over 5,000 students and staff members working at the main campus facilities full-time
