The Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS; Russian: Росси́йская акаде́мия нау́к (РАН), Rossiyskaya akademiya nauk) is a collegiate scientific society of Russia. It was established on 8 January 1724 by Peter the Great, and has played a major role in the history of science and technology in Russia. Members of the academy include 75 full members, corresponding members, and foreign members representing various scientific fields. As of November 2017, the membership also included 84 academicians and 426 scientific researchers. The RAS comprises five research institutes, 13 research centers, three affiliate member countries as well as 34 regional Scientific Centers. The main seat of the academy is located in Moscow on Leninsky Prospekt near Metro station “Universitet”. Other buildings are situated elsewhere in Saint Petersburg (on Vasilyevsky Island), Sochi, Nizhny Novgorod, Vladivostok, Tomsk, Kazan’, Chelyabinsk, Yekaterinburg, Perm’.
