The SETI Institute is a not-for-profit research organization whose mission is to “explore, understand and explain the origin, nature and prevalence of life in the universe”. The institute is headquartered in Mountain View, California, and has a staff of over 100 scientists, educators and support personnel.
The SETI Institute was founded in 1984 by Thomas Pierson and Jill Tarter. Dr. Pierson served as the first president and CEO of the SETI Institute from 1984 until his death in 2015. Dr. Tarter served as the director of the Center for SETI Research at the SETI Institute from its inception until she retired in 2012.
The institute operates several programs dedicated to carrying out its mission. These include efforts to search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), to study our own planet and solar system (astrobiology), and to engage people everywhere in these endeavors through education and public outreach programs.
Each year, the SETI Institute hosts a number of public events including lectures, symposia and workshops on various topics related to science, technology and space exploration. The institute also offers educational programs for teachers, students and lifelong learners; these include online courses, summer camps and distance learning opportunities.
