The Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) is a professional society dedicated to the study and management of environmental problems caused by chemicals. SETAC was founded in 1960 by a group of scientists from academia, government, and industry who were concerned about the increasing number of environmental problems caused by chemicals. The society now has more than 4,000 members in over 60 countries. SETAC’s mission is to promote the science of environmental toxicology and chemistry and its application for the protection of human health and the environment.

SETAC’s work is organized into five main activities: research, information exchange, education and training, communication, and advocacy. SETAC operates through a network of regional offices, special interest groups, technical divisions, standing committees, ad hoc task forces, working groups, editorials boards for its three peer-reviewed journals (Environmental Toxicology & Chemistry; Integrated Environmental Assessment & Management; Science of The Total Environment), an annual meeting that attracts several thousand attendees from around the world each year.
