Founded in 1994 by Jim and Virginia Stowers, the Stowers Institute for Medical Research is a world-renowned basic biomedical research organization dedicated to improving human health. The institute’s 500 scientists and support staff work in 26 state-of-the-art laboratories pursuing discoveries at the molecular level that will lead to new ways of preventing, diagnosing and treating disease.
The institute has been built on the belief that great science can be accomplished through teamwork, transparency and a sense of community. These values are reflected in our commitment to open access scientific publishing, sharing of resources and collaborative research.
The institute is located on a 20-acre campus in Kansas City, Missouri, USA. Our facilities include two buildings totaling more than 400,000 square feet of laboratory space, a library, an animal facility and administrative offices. We also have a 30-acre farm where we grow crops for use in our experiments.
In addition to our own research programs, we offer training opportunities for students and postdoctoral fellows from around the world. We also partner with other institutions to advance medical research and provide educational outreach to the general public about the importance of basic science discovery.
