Sustainable (adjective): able to be maintained at a certain rate or level.
The term sustainability is used to describe a diverse set of areas within the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. The common thread that connects these various fields is the attempt to find ways of living and interacting with our environment so that the needs of current generations are met without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
There are many different approaches to thinking about sustainability. Some people see it as a necessary response to environmental problems such as climate change, others view it as an opportunity to create more environmentally friendly societies and economies, and still others approach it from a social justice perspective, seeing sustainability as a way to address global inequalities. No matter what your starting point is, there are many ways you can get involved in promoting sustainability.
In general, sustainable development is often understood as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It contains within it two key concepts:
the concept of need, in particular the essential needs of the world’s poorest people for food, water, shelter and health; and
the idea of limitations imposed by technology and society on environmental resources and by ecological systems.
