Swinburne University of Technology (also known as Swinburne) is a public research university located in Melbourne, Australia. Founded in 1908 as the Eastern Technical College, it was renamed Swinburne Institute of Technology in 1969 and gained university status in 1992.
Swinburne has campuses at Hawthorn in Melbourne’s inner east, Croydon and Wantirna South in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne, and Malaysia. The university also operates a Centre for Adult Education (CAE) which offers both higher education and vocational training programs. In addition to its main campuses, Swinburne has six satellite centres located throughout Victoria: Brunswick, Heidelberg, Lilydale, Moss Vale, Warrnambool and Werribee.
Swinburne offers undergraduate degrees across a broad range of disciplines including business, design, engineering, humanities and social sciences. The university also offers postgraduate courses including MBA and PhD programs.
With over 20 000 students enrolled across its campuses and online programs, Swinburne is one of the largest universities in Victoria. International students come from more than 100 countries making up 22% of the student population. Student life at Swinburne is diverse with more than 150 clubs and societies on offer. The university also has an extensive sport program with teams competing in national competitions such as Australian Football League (AFL), National Basketball League (NBL) and Varsity Games.
