Switzerland is a landlocked country in Central Europe. It has an area of 41,285 km2 (15,940 sq mi) and a population of 8.5 million. The Swiss Confederation was founded in 1291, making it one of the oldest countries in the world. Switzerland is a federal republic consisting of 26 cantons with Bern as the capital city.
The Swiss Alps cover 65% of the country’s landmass and represent a major geographical feature of Switzerland. The highest mountain is Monte Rosa at 4,634 m (15,203 ft), which is also the second highest mountain in Europe after Mont Blanc. Since 2016, Switzerland has been ranked 20th on the Human Development Index (HDI) among 188 countries for 2017 data published by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Switzerland had the 8th highest GDP per capita in 2016 among 193 nations according to IMF statistics. In 2017 Bloomberg News ranked Switzerland first on its annual “Bloomberg Innovation Index”, while Forbes magazine placed Swiss cities Zurich and Geneva respectively at 3rd and 5th place on its annual list of “The World’s Most Innovative Cities”.
