Technology (from Greek τέχνη, techne, “art, skill, cunning of hand”; and -λογία, -logia) is the sum of techniques, skills, methods and processes used in the production of goods or services or in the accomplishment of objectives, such as scientific investigation. Technology can be the knowledge of techniques, processes, and the like; it can also be embedded in machines which can be operated without detailed knowledge of their workings. The human species’ use of technology began with the conversion of natural resources into simple tools. The prehistoric discovery of how to control fire increased the available sources of food and the invention of the wheel helped humans to travel in and control their environment. Developments in historic times have included agriculture, writing, glassblowing, printmaking and brewing. In modern times there have been significant developments in textile manufacturing , metallurgy , chemicals , engineering , energy production , medicine , aerospace technology and many others . With increasing levels both economic growth rates are often correlated ; as productivity increases more quickly businesses are able to reinvest profits into research & development thus leading to further exponential gains . Technological growth has lifted living standards dramatically while population numbers have increased six-fold over last century . As a result life expectancy has doubled while infant mortality rates have plummeted giving rise to a much healthier world population on average than ever before though inequalities still abound between different social groups within countries . While some argue that technology has held society back by creating barriers between people communication technologies typically decrease these barriers whilst simultaneously providing new opportunities for social interaction including online communities & globalisation .
