The Gerontological Society of America (GSA) is the world’s largest interdisciplinary organization devoted to research, education, and practice in the field of aging. The Society’s mission is “to advance the study of aging and improve the lives of older people.” GSA was founded in 1945 and has a membership of over 5,500 gerontologists from around the globe.
The Society defines gerontology as “the scientific study of aging,” which includes research on physical, mental, social, economic, and policy aspects of aging. In addition to its scientific work, GSA also promotes public understanding of aging issues and works to improve the quality of life for older adults.
One way GSA does this is by providing resources for professionals who work with older adults. These resources include journals (such as The Gerontologist), books, webinars, online courses, conferences, and networking opportunities. GSA also offers training programs for professionals who want to specialize in gerontology or expand their knowledge in this area.
In addition to its work with professionals, GSA also engages with policymakers on issues related to aging. The Society advocates for policies that will improve the lives of older adults and ensure their rights are respected. For example, GSA has worked to expand access to health care and long-term services and supports (such as home care and adult day services), increase funding for research on aging-related issues, protect Social Security and Medicare benefits, and address ageism in society.
