The University of Hong Kong, located in Pok Fu Lam on the island of Hong Kong, is a leading research university. Founded in 1911, it was the first institution of higher learning established in British-ruled Hong Kong. Today, the University comprises eight faculties and over 80 departments and institutes organized into four broad disciplinary clusters. The University has some 220 buildings on its main campus covering an area of approximately 156 hectares.

Over 30,000 students are enrolled at HKU representing more than 100 countries. The student body is diverse with backgrounds ranging from local to international. In addition to undergraduate and graduate degree programs, HKU also offers professional degrees such as law and medicine. The University’s teaching quality has been consistently ranked among the top 50 universities worldwide while its research output is among the world’s top 1%.

HKU scholars are leaders in their respective fields with many receiving prestigious awards and recognition for their work. In recent years, HKU scientists have made groundbreaking discoveries in areas such as cancer biology, artificial intelligence, quantum information science and nanotechnology. The University is also home to two Nobel laureates – Sir Joseph Rotblat (Physics, 1995) and Roger Kornberg (Chemistry, 2006).
