Tokyo Institute of Technology (東京工業大学 Tōkyō Kōgyō Daigaku), also known as Tokyo Tech, is a Japanese public research university located in Greater Tokyo Area, Japan. The university has campuses in both Omotesando and Suzukakedai. Tokyo Tech is the oldest institute of technology in Japan and one of the largest research universities in the country.
The University’s motto is “Create for Mankind” (人類のために創造する Jinrui no tame ni sōzō suru). The main campus covers an area of about 550,000 square meters with more than 40 buildings. It houses departments covering science and engineering disciplines such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, earth science and marine engineering. There are also many departmental and interdisciplinary laboratories on campus conducting cutting-edge research in various fields ranging from materials science to robotics.
Tokyo Tech offers Doctoral programs within each Department/Graduate School except for those leading to a professional degree such as theDoctor of Engineering or Doctor of Science in Architecture. As part of its internationalization efforts, Tokyo Tech launched the Global Scientific Outreach Program (GSOP) which offers opportunities for researchers around the world to collaborate with Tokyo Tech faculty members on specific projects at their home institution while continuing to receive support from their host laboratory at Tokyo Tech via Skype or other means of communication.
The Institute was founded by Sano Tsunetami (佐野常礼) as Tokyokogyo kobusho(東京工業工房) on October 1st 1881 . It was renamed Tokyokogyo daigakko(東京工業大学校)(Tokyo Institute Of Technology School)in 1889 ,and became imperialUniversity affiliated withthe ministryofIndustryin 1897 . When world WarⅡended ,theinstitutewas reorganized into National University Corporation underthe new educational systemin 1949 ,and renamedTokyokogoyodaigaku(東京左右大学)(Tokyo Metropolitan University )in 1950 . Finally it regainedits original name “Tokyokogydaigaku”whenwas designatedasoneofthe National Seven Universitiesin 1956
