Tokyo University of Science (東京理科大学 Tōkyō Rika Daigaku), also known as Rikadai, is a private university located in Tokyo, Japan. It was founded in 1881 as the Tokyo School of Pharmacy (薬科専門学校 Yakuza Semmon Gakkō). The university stresses practical research and applications over theoretical knowledge. As of 2016, it has produced 5 Nobel Prize winners and 3 Fields Medalists.
Rikadai is one of the most selective universities in Japan. In 2015, only 0.9% of applicants were accepted to the school’s undergraduate programs. The university has an extensive cooperative education program with industry partners such as Toshiba, Mitsubishi Electric, and Hitachi. Students alternate between semesters spent at Rikadai and working at their sponsor companies.
The Tokyo University of Science is organized into six faculties: Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences; Faculty of Science; Faculty of Precision Engineering; Faculty of Life Sciences and Technology; School of Education; Graduate School of Science and Technology. Each faculty is further subdivided into departments and courses. Departments offer both undergraduate and graduate programs while courses are mostly undergraduate-level except for a few specialized graduate courses offered by some departments.
The main campus is located in Noda City, Chiba Prefecture just outside Tokyo city limits with easy access to public transportation making it convenient for students who commute from the city center. There are also branch campuses located in Shinjuku (Tokyo) , Kitakata (Fukushima Prefecture), Matsudo (Chiba Prefecture) which house specific departments or cater to specific groups such as evening or weekend students . In addition to these locations Rikadai operates research laboratories around Japan including at Mt Fuji , Lake Biwa ,and various locations throughout Tokyo . International students make up approximately 10 percent of the student population coming from countries such as China , South Korea , Taiwan , Thailand , Vietnam , Malaysia , Indonesia , Nepal , India Pakistan , Bangladesh ,” United States ,” Canada ,” France ,” Germany ,” Italy ,” Spain ,” Switzerland ,” Sweden ,” UK,” Ireland ,” Australia ,” New Zealand .” The majority come to study science or engineering disciplines but international students can enroll in any course offered by Rikadai .
