UCLA is an American public research university located in Los Angeles, California. Founded in 1881 as the Southern Branch of the University of California, UCLA is the second-oldest of the 10 campuses that comprise the University of California system. UCLA offers undergraduate and graduate programs in a wide range of disciplines and enrolls about 31,000 undergraduate and 12,000 graduate students from all 50 states and more than 100 countries. The university has produced five Nobel Prize winners, four MacArthur Fellowships winners, two Pulitzer Prize winners and three Fields Medalists.

As one of the leading research universities in the world, UCLA conducts cutting-edge research across a broad range of disciplines with more than $1 billion in annual research expenditures. The university’s more than 2,000 faculty members are internationally recognized for their scholarship and teaching. They include six Nobel laureates, 22 distinguished MacArthur Fellows (commonly known as “genius grant” recipients), over 100 Fulbright Scholars and many Guggenheim Fellows.

In addition to its academic excellence, UCLA is committed to public service and outreach. The university runs dozens of community programs that provide health care, housing assistance, job training and other services to residents of Los Angeles County. It also operates eight cultural institutions open to the public – including four museums on campus – that welcome millions of visitors each year.

A leader in interdisciplinary studies, UCLA offers nearly 150 different majors spanning arts and humanities; business; education; engineering; law; medicine; nursing; policy, planning & development; sciences; social welfare; theater film & televisionand many others.. Students can also design their own individualized major through UCLA’s College Honors Interdisciplinary Studies program or combine two majors within certain degree programs such as economics-accounting or English-Creative Writing.

The most popular undergraduate majors at UCLA are Biology/Biological Sciences (8%), Business/Managerial Economics (6%), Psychology (5%), Nursing Science (4%) and Political Science & Government (3%). In terms of graduate programsm popular areas study include Education (15%), Business Administration & Management (12%), Engineering Sciences & Technologies (9%), Social Sciences (7%)and Biological & Biomedical Sciences(6%).

Located five miles from downtown Los Angeles and just a short drive from some of Southern California’s most beautiful beaches, UCLA enjoys a prime location amid oneofthe world’s great metropolitan areas.
