The University at Buffalo (UB) is a public research university with campuses in Buffalo and Amherst, New York, United States. It is the largest campus within the State University of New York (SUNY) system and offers more than 200 undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs. The university enrolls approximately 30,000 students and employs over 2,600 faculty members.
Founded in 1846 as a private medical college, UB was the first institution in Western New York to offer higher education. In 1962, UB joined SUNY as an autonomous entity. Today, UB is categorized as an R1 Doctoral University by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education and is ranked among the top 100 research universities in the world according to Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
UB’s research expenditures totaled $247 million in 2016–17 and its economic impact on Erie County was estimated to be $2.3 billion that year. The university has numerous partnerships with local businesses, including startups through its Blackstone LaunchPad incubator program; it also collaborates with IBM, Microsoft and Cisco Systems on research projects involving data analytics, cloud computing and cybersecurity.
