The University of Alabama (UA) is a public research university in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It is the flagship of the University of Alabama System and the largest by enrollment in the state. UA was established in 1820 as one of the first five public universities in the United States and one of two flagship universities in Alabama. The school began its academic instruction in 1831 with five faculty members and 97 students. UA offers programs of study leading to bachelor’s, master’s, Educational Specialist, and doctoral degrees from 13 academic divisions: Agriculture; Arts & Sciences; Business; Education; Engineering; Human Environmental Sciences; Information Science; Law; Nursing; Social Work; Communication & Information Sciences; Community Health Sciences; and The Graduate School. With an enrollment exceeding 38,000 students from all 50 states and more than 90 countries across the globe, UA is consistently ranked as a top-tier university by several national publications that evaluate institutions of higher learning. In 2019, U.S. News & World Report ranked UA tied for 103rd place among “National Universities”, while Kiplinger’s Personal Finance placed it at 98th out of 100 “Best Values” private colleges or universities nationwide for in-state students based on educational quality and affordability.
