The University of the Basque Country or Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea is a public university located in the Basque Country, Spain. Founded in 1968, it is the largest and oldest university in the Basque Country, with over 27,000 students and 1,600 teaching staff. The main campus is in Leioa (Biscay), 10 km north of Bilbao. There are campuses in Vitoria-Gasteiz (Álava) and San Sebastián (Guipúzcoa).

The University of the Basque Country has an excellent reputation both nationally and internationally. It is ranked among the top 100 universities in Europe by several independent rankings. In Spain, it is consistently ranked within the top 20 universities. The University of the Basque Country is also a member of prestigious international university networks such as Coimbra Group, EUA, Compostela Group and Utrecht Network.

The University of the Basque Country was founded in 1968 with the merger of four existing colleges: The Higher College of Labour Relations (1968), The Higher Technical School Of Engineering (1913), Mary Immaculate College (1883) and Vizcaya’s Provincial Institute Of Teacher Training (1916). With this merger, a total of 5 faculties were created: Humanities & Education Sciences; Law & Economics; Medicine & Pharmacy; Science & Technology; Social Sciences & Communication.
Currently there are 29 departments which offer 77 undergraduate degrees, 276 master’s degrees and 58 doctorates.
