Founded in 1891, the University of Gothenburg is a public university located in Sweden’s second-largest city, Gothenburg. The university is one of Scandinavia’s largest and covers six faculties: Arts, Business Economics and Law, Education and Communication, Fine Arts, Music and Design; Social Sciences and Humanities; Science and Mathematics; Technology and Health Sciences. With approximately 38,000 students and 6,000 employees, it is one of the largest universities in Scandinavia.
The University of Gothenburg has a strong international reputation and cooperates with over 500 partner universities around the world. In recent years the university has been ranked as one of the top 100 young universities in the world by Times Higher Education. It was also ranked as Europe’s 13th most international university by UI GreenMetric World University Rankings.
The main campus is situated on Vasagatan/Kungsportsavenyn in central Gothenburg. Other campuses include Sahlgrenska Academy (situated next to Sahlgrenska University Hospital), Wallenberg Laboratory (a research centre for molecular medicine)and Lindholmen Science Park (focusing on information technology).
Teaching at the University of Gothenburg is research-based which means that students are taught by leading researchers in their field. The university offers over 200 programmes leading to Bachelor’s degrees, Master’s degrees or Doctoral degrees. Notable alumni include Carl von Linné (the father of taxonomy), Anders Celsius (inventor of the Celsius temperature scale)and Emil Axelsson Lenngren (poet).
