The University of Jyväskylä is a university in Finland. It was established in 1963. The university has about 15,000 students and 2,800 staff members. It is one of the leading universities in Finland. The university offers education in nine faculties: Arts, Biology and Environmental Science, Business and Economics, Education, Humanities, Mathematics and Science, Medicine, Social Sciences, Sport Sciences.

The University of Jyväskylä is located in the city of Jyväskylä. The city is situated in Central Finland on the shores of Lake Päijänne. Jyvaskyla has a population of about 140 000 people (2015).

The University of Jyvaskyla was established in 1963 as a teacher training school. It became a full-fledged university in 1968 when it was given the status of an autonomous institution under Finnish law.

Since its inception, the University of Jyvaskyla has been known for its high-quality research and teaching. The university has produced many world-renowned scientists over the years including Academy Professors Matti Heikkilä (physics), Risto Vilkman (chemistry), Seppo Virtanen (agricultural sciences), Hannu Lauerma (medicine) and Jaakko Hintikka (philosophy). In recent years, the university has been especially successful in attracting international research funding from competitive sources such as the European Research Council (ERC).

The University of Jyvaskyla is one of the most popular universities in Finland with around 11 500 applications per year for some 1 500 places available annually on undergraduate degree programmes. Admission to the university is highly selective with only around 10% of applicants being offered a place each year.

The majority of degree programmes at the University are taught in Finnish but there are also a number offer courses which are taught either entirely or partly in English. These include degrees programmes such as International Business Administration and Information Technology which are aimed at attracting international students to study at the university
