The University of Manchester is a large public research university located in Manchester, England. The university was established in 1824 as the Owens College, and was granted its royal charter as the Victoria University of Manchester in 1880. The university has an international reputation for academic excellence, with over 200 Nobel laureates associated with the institution.
The university is a member of the Russell Group of leading British research universities, the Worldwide Universities Network, the Association of Commonwealth Universities and is also ranked among the world’s top 100 universities by several major league tables. The university has four main campuses across Greater Manchester: its central campus on Oxford Road; a second campus at Sackville Street; a medical school and teaching hospital on Grafton Street; and a fourth campus in Wythenshawe.
Manchester offers an extensive range of undergraduate programmes, as well as postgraduate degrees including master’s degrees, PhDs and professional qualifications. The university also provides continuing education opportunities through MOOCs, short courses, evening classes and executive education programmes.
The University of Manchester Library holds over 4 million printed volumes making it one of the largest libraries in Europe; it also has extensive digital resources. Special collections include the John Rylands Library which houses one of the largest collections of medieval manuscripts in Britain; Chetham’s Hospital Library – founded in 1653 and containing over 100,000 rare books – which is open to members of the public by appointment only; and Christie’s Education library – used primarily by students studying art history at Christie’s Education but also open to external researchers by appointment only. There are also numerous smaller subject-specific libraries scattered around different buildings on all four campuses.
Manchester is home to several museums managed by or closely associated with the university including: UMMAG (University Museum Manchester Archaeology Gallery); MOSI (Museum of Science & Industry); Whitworth Art Gallery; Chinese Arts Centre; People’s History Museum; National Football Museum; Royal Exchange Theatre Archive & Museum (RETAM); Stockport Air Raid Shelters & Visitor Centre; Wilmslow Guild Heritage Centre & Gardens; Worsley New Hall – now part hotel/conference centre/wedding venue managed by Marriott International but still containing some original features from when it was built for George Montagu-Dunk, 2nd Earl Grey in 1772–1774.. .
