The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) is an American public medical school located in Baltimore, Maryland. It is part of the University System of Maryland. Founded in 1807 as the College of Medicine and Surgery, the school was the first public medical school in the United States and one of the first four schools that would eventually make up The Johns Hopkins University. UMSOM is also one of only a handful of MD-granting institutions whose students spend their entire third year completing clinical rotations outside its home city. In 2019, US News & World Report ranked UMSOM as tied for 62nd among research-oriented medical schools and as tied for 38th among primary care medical schools.
The University Of Maryland School Of Medicine offers a unique curriculum for its students. The first two years are dedicated to basic sciences and preclinical coursework at the Baltimore campus. Students then spend their third year completing clinical rotations at sites throughout Maryland and around the world before returning to Baltimore for their fourth and final year devoted to advanced study and electives. This approach allows students to gain hands-on experience with patients early in their training while still receiving a broad-based education that prepare them for any number of career paths within medicine.
With more than 1,000 full-time faculty members representing all major specialties and subspecialties, UMSOM provides its students with access to some of the nation’s top physicians and researchers. The school’s faculty includes four Nobel laureates, 22 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 19 members of the Institute of Medicine (now known as the National Academy of Medicine), 13 Howard Hughes Medical Investigators, and numerous recipients of prestigious awards such as the Lasker Award and MacArthur Fellowship.
