The University of Mississippi (colloquially known as Ole Miss) is a public research university in Oxford, Mississippi. The flagship campus of the state of Mississippi’s eight public universities, it is the largest university in the state and enrolls over 24,000 students. The school was chartered by the Mississippi Legislature in 1844 and four years later admitted its first enrollment of 80 students.
Today, the university offers an array of undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees through its 15 academic departments. Among these are nationally ranked programs in pharmacy, accounting and law. In addition to its main campus in Oxford, Ole Miss operates satellite campuses in Jackson, Tupelo and Southaven. The university also owns land near Batesville that serves as a research and education center for crop development; this facility is known as the Row crops Research Station.
Ole Miss is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate, masters’, specialists’ and doctorate degrees. It is classified among “R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity”. According to U.S News & World Report’s 2021 rankings, nine academic programs at Ole Miss are ranked among the top 100 nationwide while another 17 fall within the top 200 list. In 2019–2020 Times Higher Education World University Rankings placed Ole Miss 151st out of 1,258 institutions worldwide. Additionally Forbes ranks Ole Miss as number 461 on their America’s Top Colleges List for 2020, which includes only 650 schools across America meeting specific criteria such as financial health indicators and student satisfaction ratings..
