The University of Missouri (Mizzou), located in Columbia, Missouri, United States, is the flagship campus of the four-campus University of Missouri System. It is the largest university in the state of Missouri and the 17th largest in the United States. With an enrollment of 30,870 students as of 2019, it has over 300 degree programs in 21 academic colleges/schools.
It was founded in 1839 as the first public university west of the Mississippi River and the first state university in Louisiana Purchase territory. The school began accepting women students in 1867 and became coeducational two years later. As a land-grant institution, it enrolled more than 3,000 students for on-campus classes when it opened its doors for instruction for the first time on September 16, 1868,:3 making it one of only 34 public universities to be operational that year.:269 The university offers bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, 83 doctoral degrees, and 28 graduate certificates through its 13 schools and colleges: College of Agriculture & Natural Resources; College Arts & Science; Sinclair School Business; College Education; Engineering; Graduate School; Health Professions; Honors College Journalism School Law School Medicine Nursing Pharmacy & Health Sciences Rochester Institute Social Work Trulaske College Veterinary Medicine. Mizzou is one known for research with strengths across a broad spectrum from biomedicine to business to engineering to journalism to plant sciences.
