Overview
The University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) is one of the leading academic medical centers in the United States. URMC comprises the School of Medicine and Dentistry, the Strong Memorial Hospital, Highland Hospital, James P. Wilmot Cancer Center, and URMC’s other clinical and research institutions. As a comprehensive center for patient care, education, and research, URMC offers primary care to more than 500,000 patients annually from Monroe County and surrounding counties in upstate New York. The Medical Center also trains more than 400 residents and fellows each year and educates nearly 3,000 medical students.
URMC is a major economic engine for western New York state. With an annual budget of $2 billion, it is one of the region’s largest employers with over 10,000 full-time staff members. Additionally, URMC’s clinical services support approximately 27,000 jobs in the community. The Medical Center is committed to advancing health equity and inclusion and improving community health through its robust research enterprise which includes more than 1,200 active studies conducted by over 600 principal investigators representing virtually every field of medicine. In 2019 alone URMC was awarded $385 million in external funding which supported groundbreaking discoveries across a broad range of disciplines including cancer immunotherapy; precision medicine; artificial intelligence/machine learning in healthcare; Alzheimer’s disease; Vaccine development; Opioid addiction; Lyme disease; Autism spectrum disorder; Traumatic brain injury; Spinal cord injury; Regenerative medicine
