The University of South Carolina (also referred to as USC, SC, or simply Carolina) is a public research university in Columbia, South Carolina. It is the flagship institution of the University of South Carolina System and offers more than 350 degree programs through 21 schools and colleges. The university’s endowment reached $1.2 billion in 2016. With an enrollment of over 34,000 students, USC is the largest university in the state and one of the largest in the country. USC employed 2,453 full-time faculty members and approximately 17,400 staff members in 2015. The school has an alumni network exceeding 200,000 graduates located throughout the United States and 140 countries. Seven alumni have been selected as Rhodes Scholars; James Petigru Carson was the first American lawyer to be so honored. Additionally, nine Nobel laureates have been affiliated with USC; six since 1985 with one laureate each coming from Chemistry (1985), Physics (1988), Physiology or Medicine (1989), Economics (1993), Literature (1997), and Chemistry again most recently in 2020.. In athletics, the University of South Carolina fields teams that compete collectively as the Gamecocks & Lady Gamecocks—the namesake for all 23 varsity sports sanctioned by the Southeastern Conference (SEC) which includes men’s baseball & basketball programs that have both won national championships within their respective sport
