The University of Southampton (informally known as Soton) is a research university located in Southampton, England. The university’s origins date back to the founding of the Hartley Institution in 1862. In 1902, the Institution developed into the Hartley University College, awarding degrees from the University of London. On 29 April 1952, Queen Elizabeth II granted the status of Royal Charter to the University of Southampton, making it an independent body with its own powers and privileges.

Southampton is a founding member of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities and is consistently ranked among the top 100 institutions globally for both teaching and research quality. The university has an excellent reputation for employability, with over 92% of graduates being in employment or further study six months after graduation.

One of Southampton’s main strengths is its focus on interdisciplinary research; this has led to numerous collaborations between different departments and schools within the university as well as with outside organisations. Notable examples include partnerships with NASA,the European Space Agency, Rolls-Royce plc and Fujitsu Laboratories Europe Ltd., among others. These collaborations have resulted in numerous spin-off companies and patents being generated from Southampton-led research projects.

The University of Southampton has around 24,000 students enrolled across its five campuses: Highfield Campus (the main campus), Avenue Campus, Boldrewood Campus (home to maritime engineering courses), National Oceanography Centre and Winchester School of Art. Of these students, almost 40% are postgraduates while international students make up around 20%.
