The University of Tasmania (UTAS) is an Australian public research university located in Tasmania, Australia. Founded in 1890, it was the fourth university to be established in Australia. It is a sandstone university and is a member of the prestigious Group of Eight research-intensive universities.
UTAS has five campuses across Tasmania: Hobart, Launceston, Cradle Coast (Burnie), Sydney and Beijing. The main campus is in Sandy Bay, a suburb of Hobart which is also home to the Tasmanian School of Art and the Conservatorium of Music. The Cradle Coast campus covers nearly 200 hectares and offers courses in agriculture, business, health sciences, education and engineering. The Sydney campus provides education for midwifery students from across New South Wales and the ACT. In 2019 UTAS opened a new $45 million dollar state-of-the-art science facility at itsLaunceston campus which will accommodate 1,000 students.
The University offers undergraduate degrees through its faculties of Arts; Business; Education; Engineering & Architecture; Health Sciences; Law; Science & Mathematics; Social Sciences & Psychology and graduate programs including Doctorates by Research or Coursework degree in all faculties except Business where only Coursework Masters are offered currently . Research areas span most disciplines with over 2200 researchers organised into eight Institutes/Centres/Groups: Antarctic gateway Partnership ; Australian Maritime College ; Institute for Marine & Antarctic Studies ; Tasmanian Partnership for Advanced Computing ; Centre for Atmospheric Chemistry ; TasmaNet ; Tasmanian node of National Drug & Alcohol Research Centre . Notable alumni include former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd , author Richard Flanagan , Annette Bening actress as well as several Olympians .
In recent years UTAS has been ranked highly nationally and internationally on various league tables including: being ranked 5th in Australia for employability , No 1 young uni globally under 50 years old , top 2% world unis according to Times Higher Ed rankings 2020 as well as being rated 5 stars plus QS global ranking system since 2011 among others .
