The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) is an Australian public research university in Sydney, New South Wales. The university was founded in its current form in 1988, although its origins trace back to the 1870s. It is part of the Australian Technology Network of universities.

The present-day UTS campus is located on Broadway in the inner city suburb of Ultimo, adjacent to Central station. The university has two other main campuses located elsewhere in Sydney: one at Kuring-gai, which offers courses in health; and another at Port Macquarie which offers courses in environmental science. UTS also operates a number of smaller off-campus facilities, including satellite campuses in Bankstown and Parramatta as well as regional centres in Wollongong and Newcastle.

As of 2019, UTS enrolls 43,793 students from 151 countries across its eight faculties: Art & Design; Business; Education; Engineering & Information Technology; Health; Law; Science; and Social Sciences & Psychology. The university’s staff includes more than 2,000 academic staff members across these faculties as well as 535 professional staff members providing administrative and support services. In 2015–16, UTS had an operating budget of $857 million and total income (including government grants) of over $1 billion – making it one of the largest universities by revenue size in Australia.

In 2018 Times Higher Education ranked UTS 66th globally out of more than 250 institutions for employability while QS World University Rankings ranked it 82nd overall globally – both rankings placing it 11th amongst Australian universities. In 2018 the Academic Ranking of World Universities placed UTS 107th globally out 500 institutions while CWUR Center for World University Rankings placed it 601+ worldwide out 1000 institutions – both rankings placing it 14th amongst Australian universities . In addition, several individual subject areas have been ranked highly by various international university ranking systems . For example , Architecture / Built Environment was ranked 4th worldwide by QS World University Rankings , Civil & Structural Engineering was ranked 51st= by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects , Accounting & Finance was ranked 36th by Times Higher Education’s World Reputation Rankings , Fashion Design was ranked 13rd worldwide by QS World University Rankings , Sports-related subjects were ranked between 51st= (Physical Education) to 150th (Sports Science) globally by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects , Nursing was placed 29th worldwide by Quacquarelli Symonds’ Subject rankings whilst Arts & Humanities subjects were placed between 101st (Communication Arts) to 150th= (Psychology) globally according to Times Higher Education’sWorld Reputation Rankings .
