University of Tennessee at Knoxville (UTK) is a public university in Knoxville, Tennessee. It was founded in 1794 and is the flagship campus of the University of Tennessee system. The university has approximately 28,000 students and a faculty of over 1,200. UTK offers over 300 undergraduate and graduate programs in a wide range of disciplines.

The university is home to many research centers and institutes, including the Bredesen Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Education, the Haslam Business Analytics Center, the Institute for a Secure and Sustainable Environment, the Joint Institute for Advanced Materials, and the Stable Isotope Laboratory.

UTK is classified as an R1: Doctoral Universities – Very High Research Activity by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. In 2019, U.S. News & World Report ranked UTK as tied for 107th among national universities and 36th among public universities in the United States. The university’s sports teams compete in Division I of the NCAA as members of the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
