The University of Texas at Austin (UT) is one of the largest public universities in the United States and the flagship institution of the University of Texas System. Founded in 1883, UT Austin is home to more than 51,000 students from all 50 states and over 120 countries. The university offers more than 370 undergraduate and graduate degree programs across 18 colleges and schools.

Founded in 1883 as The University of Texas at Galveston by an act of legislature signed into law by Governor Oran Moberly Roberts on January 15th, The University Of Texas At Tyler (UTT) became part of The University Of Texas System when it was established in 1911 under Article 7443c. When UTT first opened its doors on September 28th 1912, only six buildings were completed: Main Building (now Riter Tower), Science Hall (later Moore Humanities/Social Sciences Building), Business Administration Building (later Braithwaite Liberal Arts Building), Hospitality House for Men, Hospitality House for Women(now Dormitory No 3),and Jackson Gymnasium. These original structures are still standing today on what has become known as “The Quadrangle”. With an enrollment totaling 27 students,:16 UTT admitted both menand women:21 from all races from its inception.:22 According to President James Wooten’s address during opening ceremonies:
“No tuition will be charged nor salaries paid by this corporation [University Of Texas]. All expenses necessary for carrying out its work will be borne by appropriations made by the State Legislature.”:29 By 1922,:43–44the student body had reached 575,- making it necessary to construct new buildings such as East College (now Wooten Hall), West College (abandoned after WWII), North College(later used as offices until being converted into apartments known as North Campus Place), South College(used until 1968 when it was razed for construction purposes related to IH 35)., Chandler Memorial Library(later renamed John B Chandler Library after a $1 million donation from his family)., Norma Eckis dormitories for women(razed 1998 for construction purposes related to Jester Center Residence Halls ), Jennings Memorial Infirmary(converted into Jeter Hall – home of Nursing School – 2011 ), Physical Education Fieldhouse(razed 1999 ) , Power Plant , ChemistryBuilding , BiologyBuilding .
