University of Warsaw, one of the oldest and largest universities in Poland, is a leading centre of education and research. With over 40 thousand students and almost 3 thousand academic staff, it provides excellent opportunities for both studies and career development.

The university was founded in 1816 as the Warsaw Lyceum by Stanisław Staszic, a prominent Polish statesman, patriot and scientist. It was the first institution of higher learning in Congress Poland – an autonomous Polish territory within the Russian Empire. Initially, the lyceum focused on teaching mathematics and physics, but soon expanded its curriculum to include other natural sciences, humanities and social sciences. In 1818-19 it was renamed to Main School (Szkoła Główna), and in 1825 – to Main School of Fine Arts (Szkoła Główna Sztuk Pięknych).

After Poland’s November Insurrection of 1830-31 against Russia ended in defeat, all Polish institutions of higher learning were closed down by the Tsarist authorities. The university was reopened in 1862 as a Russian imperial university under the name Imperial University of Warsaw (Императорский Варшавский университет), after Poland had been partitioned between Russia, Prussia and Austria in 1795. During World War I most campuses were evacuated to Rostov-on-Don in Russia; however some activity continued throughout the war at small clandestine campuses such as “Little Warsaw” near Kiev which educated about 1% of total pre-war student population. After Poland regained independence following WWI, campus activities resumed at full scale under newly independent nation’s Ministry of Religious Affairs and Public Education headed by Wojciech Trąmpczyński who decided to rename school again into “Warsaw Higher School” (Wyższa Szkoła Warszawska). However this renaming did not last long as just three years later school was once more named “Imperial University”, only to be given back its original name “University Of Warsaw” right before World War II started with Nazi German Invasion Of Poland on September 1st 1939 resulting also eventually into complete shutdown for rest of WWII period until 1944 when Soviet Army pushed Nazi troops out from east side territories they have occupied since 1941 including city of Warsaw itself .
School’s post war history includes changes such as moving main campus from downtown area into newly built Ochota district where it stands today since 1955 even though few departments still remain at downtown locations due legal agreements made with city government during communism era or because new buildings were not ready yet at time when move took place .
