The University of Winnipeg (UWinnipeg) is a public university in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It is the oldest university in western Canada. UWinnipeg was founded in 1871 as Manitoba College, the first institution of higher learning in the new province of Manitoba. The college became the University of Winnipeg in 1967. UWinnipeg offers undergraduate and graduate programs in arts, business & economics, education & kinesiology, science, and social science.
Located in downtown Winnipeg on Portage Avenue near the intersection with Main Street, UWinnipeg shares its campus with two other post-secondary institutions: Red River College and the Canadian Mennonite University. The campus covers over 50 city blocks with over 30 buildings, including classrooms, offices, residences, libraries, athletic facilities, and more. UWinnipeg has over 10 000 students enrolled in full-time and part-time studies from over 80 countries around the world.
UWinnipeg’s faculties and schools include Arts; Business & Economics; Education & Kinesiology; Science; and Social Science. The Faculty of Graduate Studies offers master’s degrees and doctorates in a number of disciplines. In addition to its regular academic programs, UWinnipeg also offers English Language Program for international students who need to improve their English skills before beginning degree-level studies.
UWinnipeg is known for its commitment to Indigenous education and research initiatives. More than one third of all students self-identify as Indigenous peoples (First Nations people [Status or Non-Status], Métis people or Inuit people), making it one of the largest concentrations of Indigenous peoples at any Canadian university..The University also has a strong focus on inner city youth through its Urban Circle Training Centre which provides educational opportunities for Aboriginal youth living off reserve who want to pursue careers either at an urban centre or back home on their First Nation reserves
