The Vienna University of Technology (VUT) is one of the leading technical universities in Europe. With almost 30,000 students, it is Austria’s largest technical university. The university offers a wide range of degree programmes in the fields of engineering and natural sciences. VUT has been ranked as one of the best young universities worldwide by several rankings.
The history of VUT can be traced back to 1815 when Emperor Franz I founded the “Kaiserliche Akademie der bildenden Künste” (Imperial Academy of Fine Arts). In 1872, it became the “Königlich-Preußische Technische Hochschule” (Royal Prussian Technical College) and was renamed “Technische Hochschule Wien” (Vienna Technical College) after World War I. In 1925, it was renamed “Technische Hochschule für Industrie und Handel” (Technical University for Industry and Commerce). In 1934, it was renamed again to its present name “Vienna University Of Technology” or TU Wien in German.
TU Wien has been consistently ranked among the top 100 universities in the world by various rankings. It is also one of only nine Austrian Universities to be listed on ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2019 – Architecture / Built Environment. In 2018/19 QS World University Rankings placed TU Wien at 171st overall in the world.
TU Wien is a research-intensive university with a strong focus on natural sciences and engineering. Research at TU Wien is conducted in eight departments: Mathematics and Geoinformation; Physics; Chemistry; Materials Science; Biology; Mechanical Engineering and Business and Social Sciences.
