Wind is the movement of air from one place to another. It is caused by differences in pressure, which are created by the sun’s uneven heating of the earth’s surface. Warm air rises and cooler air sinks, creating areas of high and low pressure. The wind blows from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure.
The wind has always been an important part of human life. It has helped humans travel, farm, and generate electricity. The wind is also a source of pollution, as it can blow dust and other particles into the air.
Parts of the world that experience little or no wind are called deserts. One type of desert, called a hot desert, is found near the equator where there is very little difference in temperature between day and night so there is no convection to create winds. Another type of desert, cold deserts, are located at high altitudes or latitudes where the atmosphere is very dry so again there isn’t enough moisture for convection to occur and create winds.
