Zika

Zika virus is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that was first identified in Uganda in 1947. It is related to dengue, yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis, and west Nile viruses. Zika virus is primarily transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, which are found in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The most common symptoms of Zika virus infection are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). Zika virus can also be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy and can cause birth defects such as microcephaly (small head size) and other brain abnormalities. There is no specific treatment for Zika virus infection; however, affected individuals should get plenty of rest and drink lots of fluids to help reduce symptoms. Prevention of Zika virus infection includes using mosquito repellent, wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants, staying in air-conditioned rooms or places with screens on doors and windows, and avoiding travel to areas where Zika virus transmission is ongoing.
