Nagoya University is a Japanese national university located in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. It was established in 1871 as the last imperial university of Japan and became the first among the National Seven Universities. It is one of the largest comprehensive universities in Japan with about 30,000 students. The university has eleven faculties: Letters, Law, Economics, Education, Science, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Engineering, Agriculture (including horticulture), Medicine (including dentistry), Architecture and Fine Arts. In addition to these faculties there are five schools: International Liberal Arts (ILA), Environmental Studies (ES), Information Science and Technology (IST), Biomedical Sciences(BMS) and Nursing & Rehabilitation Sciences(NRS).
The history of Nagoya University can be traced back to 1871 when it was founded as the last Imperial University of Japan following Tokyo Imperial University and Kyoto Imperial University. The Meiji government planned to build a new imperial university in western Japan to serve as a counterbalance to these two universities which were both located in eastern parts of the country. The city of Nagoya donated land for the construction of the new university campus and also provided financial support for the establishment of the institution.
Nagoya University started out with four departments: Literature; History and Geography; Physics and Chemistry; Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The number of students enrolled at the time was 154. In 1886, three more departments were added: Law; Political Science; Commerce and Banking bringing the total number of departments up to seven. In order to accommodate increasing numbers of students a second campus was built in 1893 on an adjacent piece of land donated by citizens of Nagoya City.
At present there are eleven faculties within Nagoya University offering courses leading to Bachelor’s degrees, Master’s degrees or Doctorates across a wide range disciplines including letters, law, economics education science , pharmacy , architecture , engineering , agriculture , medicine , nursing & rehabilitation sciences .
The main campus covers an area totaling approximately 1.4 square kilometers making it one Of The Largest comprehensive universities campuses In japan . There is also a botanical garden known as “Yaen-koen” which Was opened To The Public In 1926 .
