To comprehend and address these challenges, accurate climate data and reliable predictive models are necessary to project the future implications of the climate crisis on these vulnerable forests. Noce and his team developed species distribution models for forests in various areas, incorporating climate change projections based on different emission scenarios. This data was used to create maps indicating the suitability of land for future tree growth up to 2050.

Understanding how different species will be impacted by changing conditions is crucial for planning, management, and conservation efforts. Noce stressed that forests provide essential ecosystem services, including water cycle regulation, biodiversity preservation, wood and non-wood product provision, tourism support, carbon capture, and storage. Decisions made today will have far-reaching consequences for these services, making informed choices imperative.

The study’s findings revealed that most species are likely to see a decrease in their suitable range, while some may extend beyond their current habitat, notably the European larch and Turkey oak. This trend was observed under both emission scenarios, with varying degrees of change. Overall, the tree line is expected to shift to higher elevations, potentially leading to the loss of species with specific range requirements. High mountain ecosystems like alpine meadows may also become scarcer as trees encroach on these areas.

While it’s challenging to identify clear winners or losers among the studied tree species, the silver fir and European beech are particularly vulnerable. Among the five regions examined, the northern and north-eastern Apennines face the greatest risk, with all existing tree species vulnerable to change. The study emphasized that mixed stands of trees with diverse species are more resilient.

However, the introduction of survivor species could introduce new vulnerabilities. For example, the Maritime pine, a candidate for bolstering forests in the southern Apennines, is more prone to fire than the currently prevalent tree species. As the risk of wildfires is expected to increase, this could pose significant challenges.

The authors cautioned that the relationship between environmental variables and species presence may not remain the same as in the past, and change could still hold surprises. Nevertheless, these high-quality models serve as valuable tools to identify species and forests that could potentially withstand the impacts of the climate crisis.

Dr. Noce expressed plans to expand and deepen this research in Italy, thanks to funding from the European Next Generation EU program. The goal is to extend the geographical scope and time horizon of the study, continuing efforts to better understand and address the challenges facing Italian mountain forests in a changing climate.
