Dr. Boxin Zhao, a professor in Waterloo’s Department of Chemical Engineering, explains, “To effectively treat burn victims, we can utilize 3D printing technology to customize the shape of the dressing. Furthermore, the material exhibits excellent surface adhesion, which is a crucial feature.” Dr. Zhao’s team has made remarkable progress in developing intelligent hydrogel materials for reusable wound dressings. “The material adheres to the skin effortlessly and can be easily removed. Achieving the delicate balance required for optimal adhesion is a remarkable achievement,” he adds.

During the development of this dressing, the researchers employed 3D scanning techniques to customize the dressing according to the individual needs of each patient. This customization ensures excellent contact with complex surfaces like noses and fingers, making it an ideal solution for creating personalized wound dressings for burn victims.

The material also holds promise for cancer treatment. In conventional chemotherapy, patients often spend hours in clinics, leading to fatigue and discomfort. The smart dressing is composed of a biopolymer derived from seaweed, a thermally responsive polymer, and cellulose nanocrystals. “We also anticipate exciting applications in the beauty and cosmetic industry,” mentions Zhao, Waterloo’s Endowed Chair in Nanotechnology. “Cosmetologists can employ 3D scanning technology to analyze their clients’ facial features and create hydrogel masks infused with specific facial and skin regimen products. Furthermore, this innovative approach can greatly benefit plastic surgeons.”

This research serves as a proof of concept for Dr. Zhao’s Surface Science and Bio-nanomaterials Laboratory Group. Moving forward, the team aims to further enhance the material’s properties to make it even safer and commercially viable.
