To gain further insight into the influence of taurine levels on lifespan, Parminder Singh and colleagues measured blood taurine concentrations in mice, monkeys, and humans at different ages. The researchers discovered a significant decline in serum taurine concentrations, with 15-year-old monkeys having levels 85% lower than their 5-year-old counterparts. Similarly, taurine levels declined by over 80% over the course of a human lifespan. Reversing this decline through taurine supplementation increased the median lifespan of worms and mice by 10% to 23% and 10% to 12%, respectively. Notably, in mice, oral taurine administration at doses of 500 and 1000 milligrams per kilogram of body weight per day was associated with improvements in strength, coordination, cognitive functions, and a deceleration of key markers of aging, such as cellular senescence, mitochondrial and DNA damage, and inflammaging. Furthermore, taurine supplementation positively impacted bone health, metabolism, and immune function in middle-aged rhesus macaques.
While the reversal of taurine deficiency during aging demonstrates potential as an anti-aging strategy, the authors caution that further research and human clinical trials are necessary to confirm whether taurine supplementation can increase healthy lifespan in humans. In a perspective provided by Joseph McGaunn and Joseph Baur, they acknowledge that while few risks have been associated with taurine supplementation, the potential for risks should still be considered due to the lack of large, long-term human safety trials. The doses used in the study by Singh et al. would be considerably high for humans. Therefore, caution should be exercised when considering taurine supplementation as a means to enhance human health and longevity.
